R.I.T. Excursion Unearths PastQueensland Parliament HouseOctober 2000 -- A recent class excursion with students from Russo Institute of Technology to Queensland Parliament House resulted by accident in an interesting find and as a result uncovered some further local family history. As part of the guided tour, the security officer started explaining how the photographs on the downstairs corridor walls depicted the history and development of Brisbane in particular the surrounds of Parliament House. One of the photographs was of a sailing ship berthed across the river at South Brisbane, with the inscription on the plaque, "The barque Hirotha at Webster's Wharf, South Brisbane, in 1902. On the roof of the warehouse behind the ship, the words, "WEBSTER & CO could be faintly made out. This was the company of my Great Grandfather and his brother, W & A Webster. The Webster & Co wharf was situated on the South Bank of the Brisbane river, in the South Brisbane Reach. A contract was let on 22nd June 1889 for the construction of this wharf. Webster & Co. was a merchant firm which had bulk stores in Mary Street, George Street, Stanley Street, West End and in Fortitude Valley as well as a factory in Mary Street. The bulk stores stored sugar, flour, cement and general station supplies. It also had branch offices and warehouses in Kent Street, Maryborough, Quay Street, Rockhampton and Sturt Street, Townsville. The company had a number of departments including general merchandise, wines and spirits, tea, coffee & eastern produce, hardware, shipping, stationery, printer's furnishing, insurance - marine, fire & life, manufacturing and the steam tug "Beaver".
